In 1991, Sally C.’s first encounter with Sister B. occurred during a retreat held at Pilgrim Firs in Port Orchard, WA. It was an unforgettable meeting. Three years later, in 1994, she found herself tasked with an unexpected mission: driving Sister B. to SeaTac airport for her journey back to California.
As they navigated the road to the airport, Sister B. posed an intriguing question: Did Sally believe that women in the Pacific Northwest would be interested in a Spiritual Retreat led by her? Without hesitation, Sally replied with a resounding "yes." Little did she know that she was unwittingly volunteering herself for a significant role in this endeavor. Sister B. then asked her to assemble a committee and identify a suitable venue. Sally confessed her cluelessness about where to even begin, but Sister B. reassured her with guidance and support.
Thus, the journey began. The retreat was christened as the "Northwest Women’s Spiritual Retreat," with the inaugural event taking place in 1995. Astonishingly, the first venue search yielded the ideal location – Camp Brotherhood in Mt. Vernon. The quest was for a place that would connect us with our Higher Power, nurturing our spirituality and aiding us on our paths to recovery.
Camp Brotherhood, a working farm nestled among sprawling fir trees and offering breathtaking views, brimmed with trails and an array of animals. This serene haven became our spiritual sanctuary for two decades until it changed ownership, rendering it unavailable for retreats.
In 2015, we embarked on a new chapter by relocating to Warm Beach in Stanwood. Our spiritual journey continued, enriched by the company of our fellow sisters in recovery. Sister B. chose to retire and return to her homeland, Ireland, in 2019. Though distant in miles, her presence persisted in our hearts. We carried on with the retreat, using her teachings as a foundation while adding our unique touch.
The Northwest Women’s Spiritual Retreat remains a robust and indispensable space for women seeking growth and healing. A powerful tradition emerged: on Friday night, each of us writes a letter to God, and by Sunday morning, we receive divine responses in the form of scripture verses. Witnessing these miracles unfold is truly awe-inspiring, and we recognize ourselves truly Blessed Beyond Measure!
After nine years, Sally C. handed over the reins to Judy P., who admirably guided the retreat for another decade. The mantle of "fearless leader" then passed to Edie S., who continues to manage the retreat with precision.
We owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to Sister B. and the dedicated committees that tirelessly made this journey possible. Most importantly, our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the remarkable women who attend, each contributing to the tapestry of our collective growth and healing.
